EMS Personnel Safer After Training
Students participating in a recent training course will feel a bit more confident
when dealing with an aggressive patient. EMT's and Paramedics from 4 different
agencies participated in the hands-on class held at WAVES Ambulance. The 7-
hour course was taught over 2 Wednesday evenings.

CNY Personal Safety Instructors Prepare for Busy September.
On September 12th, Shawn Tompkins and Jay Scott will travel to Hollywood, CA
to present a hands-on workshop at the National Association of EMS Educator's
annual symposium. "We are honored to be included in an event that attracts the
best EMS educators in the Country" says Tompkins. Shawn and Jay will train
students in the proper patient control procedures as well as self-defense
techniques . Upon returning from California, Shawn will travel to the NY State
Academy of Fire Sciences as an adjunct instructor for "Women's Firefighter
Week", stressing the importance of scene safety to females in the fire service.
3 CNY Personal Safety Instructors Complete Certification
Patrick and Shawn Tompkins along with Alex Hebert recently traveled to the
Allegheny County Police Academy in PA. The three spent the week attending the
Pressure Point Control Tactics "Violent Patient Management" instructor
certification process. The training provided a great opportunity to fine tune old
techniques as well as learn a host of new ones. Look for these new techniques in
our upcoming courses !
New classes Forming !
A new "Violent Patient Management" class has been scheduled for December 7th
and 14th. Both classes will start at 1830 hours at the W.A.V.E.S. Ambulance
Training Room. Per-registration is required since the class size is limited. To

Southwood Firefighters Complete Violent Patient Training
Firefighters and EMS providers from the Southwood Fire Department spent most
their Saturday practicing techniques to defend themselves from unexpected
attacks. The 8 hours of training covered topics such as scene safety, self rescue
techniques, proper patient control tactics, and partner rescue maneuvers. Click

Women's Self Defense Class for St. Joe's Nursing Students
Recently CNY Personal Safety Staff completed a night of training with students
from the St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing. The focus of the class was on
escaping an attack in both their personal or professional lives. A few pictures
